Underarm Hair Removal
At the onset of puberty, the hair, especially in the underarm, start to appear. Historically, underarm hair removal was shown in public media around the 1915 when several magazines in the United States and the United Kingdom featured a woman in a dress with her underarms shaved. At the turn of the century, shaving became even more popular with the invention and eventual commercial offing of the safety razor. Not only has shaving been accepted as part of the grooming routine for women, even men have adopted the practice for hygienic and aesthetic reasons.
Some misconceptions about shaving as an underarm hair removal method have developed throughout the years. One of these is that shaving results in thicker and darker hair. This is not entirely true and is a matter of appearance. Hair that is shaved grow into stubbles and are coarser. Underarm hair is also found to grow faster than those in other parts of the body. That is why shaving should be done often. The downside to shaving is the possibility of developing ingrown hairs and the dark appearance of the underarm skin.
The darkened appearance of underarm skin can be avoided with another underarm hair removal method, waxing. Waxing is an effective way to remove unwanted hair but it could be painful. Hot wax is applied to the underarms and left to harden for a few minutes. The prescribed drying time is often included in the packaging for home wax kits, along with instructions on how to apply and pull off the dried wax. If you do not want to worry about timing or application techniques, waxing can also be done in spas and skin care clinics. Professional skin care attendants can take do the entire procedure for you while you lie or sit comfortably. Waxing is recommended to be done every few weeks.
One other method that works like waxing is plucking. This is the cheapest of all methods of hair removal. Otherwise known as tweezing, plucking involved the pulling out of armpit hair one strand at a time. When you use tweezing and plucking as a hair removal technique, you should have some amount of time on your hands as this method takes quite a bit of time to accomplish. This also causes mild pain that often dissipates in the period after the plucking session.
If permanent removal of underarm hair is what you are looking for, then your options should include either electrolysis or laser treatment. You can successfully rid your armpits of unwanted hair permanently after several sessions of electrolysis or laser treatment. These methods, however, could be quite costly since both methods are usually done in the doctor's office where professionals are trained and experienced in handling the electrolysis or laser machine. To permanently remove hair, these two methods target the destruction of the hair follicle so that it does not produce any more hair.
Whichever method you choose depends on your budget, the area and amount of hair you want to remove, and whether you want the hair removal to be permanent or not. Do your research first and consult with your dermatologist before you undertake anything that will require chemical applications to your skin. Even plucking and shaving can cause setbacks as folliculitis.
