Having facial hair is normal for all humans. Having excessive facial hair, however, can be embarrassing for the female members of the human race. There are about 22% out of all the women in the United States have unwanted facial hair that contribute to self-esteem and self-image problems. While the condition is not harmful at all and is not found to cause any other disease, a lot of these women seek treatment for excessive facial hair for their own personal reasons.
There are a number of options for removing unwanted facial hair. Some of these options can even be done in the comfort of your own home without any medical expertise required. Those that yield more permanent results often require you to visit a dermatologist or a medical clinic. Topical treatments can also be prescribed in combination with other procedures. The choice of facial hair removal procedure is entirely up to you. It is also largely dependent on the cause of the excessive hair growth - genetics, medical condition, high levels of male hormones etc... Most cases of unwanted hair is from unknown causes and can be remedied by most hair removal treatments.
The most common hair removal method is shaving. Women, however, who have excess facial hair above the upper lip, the chin, or other parts of the face should not use this method as this would result in coarser re-growth. Contrary to the belief that shaving causes faster and thicker hair growth, shaving just makes hair feel thicker and cause dark stubbles. Needless to say, as far as facial hair is concerned, shaving is not on top of the list of hair removal options.
Waxing is a more acceptable facial hair removal option. Using a mixture of hot oil, paraffin, and resin, hair is temporarily removed. This mixture is applied to the area with excessive facial hair at its melted form. After a few minutes, when the mixture has cooled and hardened, it is stripped off of the area effectively pulling out hair with it. Waxing can be slow and painful but hair regrowth is not to be expected in a few weeks. Washing off the waxy residue can also be tedious.
Another way to remove excess facial hair is through plucking. This takes a lot of time especially if you have a large area to work on. Hair strands should also be long enough for a plucking tool like a tweezer to be able to grasp it and pull it off from the root. Plucking or tweezing is an inexpensive hair removal solution. It could be mildly painful to pluck each hair strand one at a time but the pain does not last long and hair usually takes weeks to grow back.
For more permanent facial hair removal methods, you can consider electrolysis or laser treatment. Both treatment methods require you to visit your doctor's office to have the procedure done. In electrolysis, a fine needle is inserted into the hair follicle and then an electrical current is passed through the needle to destroy the hair follicle, preventing it from producing any more hair. Laser treatment, on the other hand, uses light from a laser instrument to destroy the hair from the root. Both treatment methods are expensive, but extremely effective although you would probably need to go to your doctor's office for several sessions before all the hair is permanently removed.
